Adoptive Families

Family Adoption Center offers comprehensive adoption services in western Pennsylvania. Applications are encouraged from persons of all races and ethnic backgrounds; FAC does not discriminate on the basis of religion, ethnic background, income, or race.

Pre-placement educational sessions are provided to adoptive parents. In small groups, they learn about Family Adoption Center's programs and have the opportunity to consider the emotional, legal, and practical aspects of the adoption process and parenting.

Family Adoption Center is not able to guarantee placement of a child to all prospective adoptive parents, nor does it promise to provide placement within a certain time. However, the agency does strive to minimize the waiting time for placement of infants. In domestic adoption, newborns are placed directly with the adoptive parents upon leaving the hospital.

The Adoption Process

Depending on whether the adoptive parents have chosen to pursue domestic or international adoption, the process will vary.

Domestic Adoption

  • written application
  • initial interview with FAC social worker
  • pre-adoptive screening and education in small groups
  • pre-placement services, including discussion of adoption plan and home study
  • placement of child with adoptive parents
  • post-placement services, including preparation of necessary reports
  • supervisory visits
  • finalization of adoption

Home Study

Pennsylvania law requires that every person adopting a child must have a home study. This narrative report about the potential adoptive parent(s) and their environment includes (but is not limited to):

  • information about family background
  • health status
  • marital relationship (if applicable)
  • educational/ employment history
  • home/ community environment
  • financial status
  • criminal and child abuse clearances

Family Adoption Center provides home study services both to those who use FAC's adoption services and those who pursue private, out-of-state and international adoptions. Although an adoption agency located in another state or country might be facilitating the adoption, the home study must be done locally. FAC can provide this service with the sensitivity and expertise needed for this important component of the adoption.

If you would like an adoptive parent application or more information about Family Adoption Center's programs, phone 1-800-422-2971 or 412-288-2138 or contact FAC.

International Adoption

Family Adoption Center is currently piloting a program to facilitate international adoption placements.
